Timber’s natural beauty can be preserved with a range of oils or stains.
For a Prestige Barn Door choose one of our Australian Timbers and seal it to preserve the look for years to come.
Tasmanian oak is a premium Australian hardwood timber. It is a versatile timber perfect for both construction and interior applications. Tasmanian Oak hardwood is light in colour, varying from straw to reddish brown with intermediate shades of cream to pink. It is recognised for its excellent staining qualities, which allow ready matching with other timbers, finishes or furnishings.
Australian blackwood, is an Acacia species native in South eastern Australia. It has a heartwood golden brown, often with narrow bands of darker colour indicative of the growth rings. Sometimes reddish streaks are also present. Grain usually straight but sometimes wavy, producing a fiddleback figure. While blackwood is a durable, interior-use timber it has a low in-ground durability and is not ideal for external applications.
Spotted gum is one of Australia’s premium native hardwoods with a striking appearance and a high degree of natural durability and strength, making it an ideal timber for a variety of structural, exterior and interior applications. Spotted Gum are appreciated for their back-sawn grain structure, attractive markings and vibrant colour palette. The heartwood ranges from light brown through to dark red-brown hues. Compared to other Australian hardwoods, spotted gum is a minimal staining timber as it is less prone to bleed-through of tannins than other species.
Blackbutt is a large Australian hardwood that is commonly used for structural and exterior applications. The common name blackbutt came about due to the tree’s appearance after bushfire, whereby the buttress was significantly darkened. The heartwood ranges from golden yellow to pale brown, although occasionally a slight pinkish colour may be present. Blackbutt has an even texture and generally straight grain making it appealing for interior use applications. Blackbutt can be stained, painted or polished and provides good fire resistance
Meranti ranges from pale-red to reddish/brown. It has a moderately coarse grain but even in texture with an attractive ribbon feature. Light red meranti is a tropical rainforest species found throughout South East Asia and the South West Pacific. In Australia, light red meranti is marketed simply as meranti, or can be found under the names Borneo cedar, seraya, lauan, and Philippine mahogany. The timber can be painted, stained, or polished but the open grain means surfaces should be filled before finishing.
Radiata pine is native to the central coast of California but is widely planted in Australia and New Zealand. It makes up 28% of Tasmania’s timber plantations and is very popular. The texture of radiata pine is fine, but uneven, and knots are common. The timber is fairly soft and has a low density, often with very wide annual growth rings. The sapwood is white to pale yellow, but often indistinguishable from the heartwood, which is light brown to yellow.
Tallowwood is an extremely hard, durable and versatile Australian native hardwood species. Its timber products are suitable for a wide range of applications. Tallowwood is a moderate to large tree occurring in wet sclerophyll forests of coastal regions from the Hunter River district of New South Wales to Maryborough and Fraser Island, Queensland. The heartwood of this species ranges in colour from pale to dark yellow-brown, with occasional tinges of olive green. Sapwood is a whitish colour. The texture of tallowwood timber is moderately coarse, generally with interlocked grain. Unusually for an eucalypt species, tallowwood is free of gum veins. Tallowwood is highly resistant to decay and will withstand damp and wet conditions quite well.
A beautiful hardwood timber species deriving from a few locations around the world, merbau comes from the Kwila tree. The species is found in tropical climates in locations such as Queensland, Australia and Indo Pacific islands like Fiji, and Samoa, as well as Tanzania, India, and Madagascar. This hardwood is popular for its unique beauty, often compared to that of jarrah. It’s known for its unparalleled resilience and usability, along with the resistance to termites and weathering that comes with some merbau timber varieties.
Oregon is a North American softwood that is also grown in New Zealand. It varies from yellow brown to pale reddish brown in colour, and has a high resin content that can crystalise on the surface. Douglas fir is one of the world’s best-known timber species. Native to the west coast of North America, it is forested extensively in timber plantations throughout Europe, New Zealand and South America – regions where the species has become naturalised. The heartwood of Douglas fir ranges in colour from yellow through orange to a deep reddish brown. Grain is generally straight, with a pronounced difference in colour between earlywood and latewood that results in a highly distinctive figure on back-sawn surfaces.
MDF is a high grade, composite material. It is made from recycled wood fibers and resin. It is dried and pressed to produce dense, stable sheets. Because of this process, MDF does not warp or crack like wood. And since MDF is made from small particles, it doesn’t have noticeable grain patterns. This will result in a smoother finish on the cabinets.
